Ponsonby Fell is a hill located in the western part of the famous Lake District in England. It stands near the village of Gosforth in Cumbria. This hill is known for being featured in a book by a well-known author, Alfred Wainwright.

Discovering Ponsonby Fell

Ponsonby Fell reaches a height of 315 meters (1,020 feet) above sea level. In the Lake District, a "fell" is another name for a hill or a mountain. It's not one of the tallest fells, but it offers unique views of the surrounding area.

The hill is part of the beautiful landscape of the Borough of Copeland. It's a great place for outdoor adventures and exploring nature.

Alfred Wainwright's Journey

Alfred Wainwright was a famous British fellwalker and author. He wrote many guidebooks about the Lake District. Ponsonby Fell is one of the hills he described in his book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland.

Wainwright's suggested path for climbing Ponsonby Fell starts in Gosforth. He described an anti-clockwise route. This path follows the River Bleng before heading north towards the top of the hill.

After reaching the summit, the route descends towards a place called Wellington. Wainwright suggested taking a bus back to Gosforth from there. He noted that the main road, the A595 road, was busy and lacked a safe footpath.

The Summit and Views

Wainwright had some interesting thoughts about Ponsonby Fell. He once wrote that "There are no fells not worth climbing." However, he also said Ponsonby Fell was "very nearly in their category."

He described reaching the summit as feeling like "nobody has ever been there before." But then, he found a small cairn at the top. A cairn is a pile of stones built by people, often to mark a summit or a path. This showed that others had indeed been there before him!

Even with his unique comments, Wainwright included Ponsonby Fell in his detailed guides. This shows that every part of the Lake District has its own special charm.
