From Coal Mine to Green Space
Poolsbrook Country Park wasn't always a green and peaceful place. It used to be the site of the Ireland Colliery, which was a large coal mine. After the mine closed, the area was left neglected and unused for a while.
A New Life for the Land
Over time, this old mining site was completely changed. It was transformed from a forgotten industrial area into the beautiful country park you see today. Now, it's a place where people can relax and enjoy many useful facilities.
Community and Green Living
A special group called the Friends of Poolsbrook Country Park helps out a lot. These are local volunteers who give their free time to run the park's cafe. They work hard to make the park a welcoming place for everyone.
Since 2008, part of the park has been home to a camp site run by the Caravan and Motorhome Club. This site is designed with eco-friendly features, meaning it's good for the environment. The park is also right next to the famous Trans Pennine Trail, which is a long path for walking and cycling.
Fun Activities at the Park
Poolsbrook Country Park is a busy place with lots to do.
Join the Parkrun Fun
Every Saturday morning, a special event called a Parkrun takes place in the park. This is a free, timed 5-kilometre run or walk that anyone can join. It's a fantastic way to get some exercise and meet new people in the community.
