Andrae Hugh Sutherland (born on July 19, 1988), known as Popcaan, is a famous Jamaican dancehall singer. Dancehall is a type of music that started in Jamaica in the late 1970s.
In 2008, Popcaan joined Vybz Kartel's Gaza Music Empire. He became well-known in 2010 with the hit song "Clarks." This song was a tribute to the popular shoe brand. Later, in 2013, Popcaan signed with Mixpak Records. He then released his first album, Where We Come From.
In 2016, Popcaan signed with Canadian rapper Drake's record label OVO Sound. He also signed with Warner Records. His second album for Mixpak, called Forever, came out in 2018. Popcaan has many popular songs like "Only Man She Want" and "Everything Nice." He has worked with many international artists, including Drake and Gorillaz. Popcaan also acted for the first time in the movie The Intent 2: The Come Up in 2018.

Early Life and Beginnings
Andrae Sutherland was born in Saint Thomas Parish, Jamaica. He grew up in a town called Portmore. He lived in a neighborhood known as Gangsta City. Popcaan has said his childhood was "rough." He had to stop going to school because of the difficult situations in his town. His close friend Scumpy gave him the stage name "Popcaan." Sadly, Scumpy passed away due to violence in Portmore.
Music Career Journey
Early Steps in Music (2007–2010)
In 2007, Popcaan met Vybz Kartel at a local music event. Kartel invited him to join his Portmore Empire music group. Kartel became Popcaan's producer and mentor. He taught Popcaan about the music business. Kartel also took him to big shows like Sting and Reggae Sumfest.
Popcaan started making music with producer NotNice. NotNice was the first person to record his voice professionally. He began with songs like "Gal Wine" and "Jah Jah Protect Me." Other early hits included "Gangsta City" and "Hot Grabba."
Growing Fame (2010–2013)
Popcaan became very famous in 2010 with "Clarks." This song was a collaboration with Vybz Kartel. The song's success made sales of the British Clarks shoes go up all over Jamaica. In 2011, Popcaan won awards for Best New Artist. "Clarks" also won Song of the Year for Dancehall music.
In early 2012, Popcaan released a new mixtape called Yiy Change. This followed his 2010 mixtape Hot Skull, Fry Yiy, Boil Brainz. In March, his song "Only Man She Want" appeared on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. This was his first time on a Billboard chart. The song was later remixed by rapper Busta Rhymes.
Popcaan also appeared in The New York Times. The article talked about how popular "Only Man She Want" was becoming. At the Youth View Awards, Popcaan won three awards. These included Favourite Summer Song and Young, Hot and Hype Male of the Year.
Since then, Popcaan has toured all over the world. He has performed in Europe, Canada, and the Caribbean. While in Canada, Popcaan met Canadian rapper Drake. Drake has often said he admires Popcaan's music. In 2013, Popcaan released the video for "Unruly Rave." This video was filmed in Toronto, Ontario.
In 2012, Popcaan was featured on Pusha T's song "Blocka." His voice was also used by Kanye West on his album Yeezus in 2013.
Albums and Global Recognition (2014–Present)
In 2014, Popcaan signed a deal with Mixpak Records. His first studio album, Where We Come From, was released on June 10, 2014. The album's first song, "Everything Nice," came out in October 2013. The album reached number 2 on the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart. Its music video received millions of views online.
In June 2014, Popcaan was featured on the cover of The Fader magazine. He also appeared on Melissa Steel's song "Kisses for Breakfast." This song became a top ten hit in the UK in August 2014.
In September 2014, he was nominated for a MOBO Award. This was for Best Reggae Act. He won the MOBO Award in both 2015 and 2016.
In May 2015, Popcaan was featured on Jamie xx's song "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)." He also worked with American rapper Young Thug on this track.
In January 2016, Popcaan was featured on the song "I'm in Control" by the English electronic music duo AlunaGeorge. On March 29, 2016, a song called "Controlla" by Drake was leaked. Popcaan was featured on this leaked version. A different version without Popcaan was later on Drake's album Views.
On April 28, 2016, Popcaan released his single "Ova Dweet." In June 2016, Popcaan performed in the UK for the first time with Mixpak. They won the annual Red Bull Culture Clash competition.
In March 2017, Popcaan sang on the Gorillaz song "Saturnz Barz." This song was from their album Humanz. The track reached number five on the Billboard Hot Rock Songs chart. He also toured Europe as the opening act for Drake's Boy Meets World Tour.
Popcaan announced his second album Forever on May 11, 2018. Songs like "Body So Good" and "Wine for Me" came out before the album. The album was released on July 20, 2018. It was also shown live on Boiler Room. Popcaan then performed at Reggae Sumfest the next day. Forever reached number 2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart.
On December 23, 2018, Drake announced that Popcaan would join OVO Sound and Warner Records. Popcaan's third album, Vanquish, came out on December 19, 2019. This was his first project with OVO Sound. Popcaan's fourth album, Fixtape, was released on August 7, 2020. It included songs with Drake like "All I Need" and "Twist & Turn" featuring PartyNextDoor. On October 16, 2020, Popcaan teamed up with OVO artist Preme for their EP Link Up. This EP featured artists like Davido and French Montana.
On January 27, 2023, Popcaan released his fifth album, Great Is He. This album was also released on OVO Sound. It debuted at number 3 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart.
