Poptún is a town located in the El Petén department of Guatemala. A department is like a state or province. Poptún covers an area of about 1,128 square kilometers. Many people live here; in 2002, there were about 35,663 residents. By 2012, this number had grown to around 64,988 people.
Poptún is about 385 kilometers away from Guatemala City, which is the capital of Guatemala. Since 1989, Military Zone 23 has been located in Poptún. This is a special area where soldiers from the Guatemalan Army train.
Where is Poptún Located?
Poptún is in the southeastern part of the Petén Department. It is connected to the rest of Guatemala by a 100-kilometer highway. This road leads to Flores, another important town in the Petén region.

Who Leads Poptún?
Like many towns, Poptún has a leader. The person in charge is called the Mayor. The current Mayor of Poptún is Vicente Alfredo Gil Castillo. He belongs to a political group called Viva. The Mayor helps make decisions for the town and its people.
