Poquott is a small village in Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is located on the North Shore of Long Island. In 2020, about 903 people lived there. Poquott is part of the Town of Brookhaven. Its official name is the Incorporated Village of Poquott.

History of Poquott

Poquott was first settled by Europeans in 1659. The area was known as "George's Neck" and was mostly used for farming.

During the War of 1812, a fort called "Fort Nonsense" was built at the tip of Poquott. It had one large gun. However, it didn't stop British ships from entering Port Jefferson Harbor.

Around the year 1900, an amusement park called "California Grove" opened. It was located where Washington Street is today. The park had a restaurant, a dance hall, a skating rink, and picnic areas. A steamboat brought tourists from Connecticut to its pier. This park helped Poquott become a popular place for summer homes.

Poquott continued to grow as a summer community. Many camps were located along its shores. A wealthy traveler and businessman named Edward Larocque Tinker bought a lot of land here. His family built several beautiful houses throughout Poquott.

People in Poquott worked hard to protect their shorelines from factories. Poquott was sometimes called "Bayview Park" back then. The village officially became incorporated in 1931. More homes were built in the 1980s after the Tinker family's land was sold. Today, most homes are lived in all year, but some summer homes are still there.

California Park has two large fields, a gazebo, and a private boat ramp. It also has dinghy racks and a playground. People living in Poquott have special rights to moor their boats off the village's shoreline.

The Village Hall is located at the end of Birchwood Avenue. It is next to Trustees Park. This park offers over two acres of scenic land for residents. It includes a greenhouse, private tennis courts, community gardens, a playground, and picnic areas.

A new park, Newfield Park, was added in 2023. It is next to California Park. It was named to honor Mr. Joseph Newfield, who was a long-time resident and Village Clerk.

Two paths, Steve's Path and the "Indian Trail", provide extra ways to reach Port Jefferson Harbor. Steve's Path connects Tinker Bluff Court to the harbor. The Indian Trail connects Birchwood Avenue to Walnut Beach.
