Pornpetch Wichitcholchai (Thai: พรเพชร วิชิตชลชัย, RTGS: Phonphet Wichitchonlachai; born on August 1, 1948) is a Thai lawyer. He has held important roles in the Thai government. From May 2019 to July 2024, he was the President of the Senate of Thailand. Before that, he served as the President of the National Legislative Assembly from August 2014 to May 2019. These roles are like being a leader in the country's law-making bodies.
Learning and Education
Pornpetch Wichitcholchai went to high school at Vajiravudh College. He then studied law at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, where he earned his first degree. He continued his studies at Harvard Law School in the United States, earning a master's degree. This shows he worked hard to learn about law.
A Career in Law and Government
Pornpetch Wichitcholchai started his career working for the government. He held legal positions, helping to write and understand laws.
He became a judge in the Supreme Court of Thailand, which is the highest court in the country. He also led a Court of Appeal and was even the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. This means he was a very important judge.
Besides being a judge, he taught law at many universities. He also worked with the ASEAN Law Association, which connects lawyers from different countries in Southeast Asia. He was the Executive Director and Chairman of their National Law Committee.
In 2016, as the President of the National Legislative Assembly, Pornpetch Wichitcholchai had an important job. He invited Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn to become the new King of Thailand after the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
In May 2019, he was chosen by the Senate to be their President. This was a big step in his political career.
