The President of the National Assembly is a very important leader in Thailand's government. This person is the main leader of the National Assembly of Thailand. The National Assembly is like Thailand's parliament, where laws are made.
Since 1992, the person who is the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Thailand also automatically becomes the President of the National Assembly. This means the President is usually a MP from the political party with the most seats. The President is chosen after an election. There is no limit to how many times someone can be elected to this role.
The job of President of the National Assembly began in 1932. This was when Thailand's first law-making body was created. The first person to hold this important role was Chaophraya Thammasakmontri.

What the President Does
The President of the National Assembly has many important jobs. These jobs help Thailand's government work smoothly. The President is also the main representative of the law-making part of the government.
As President of the National Assembly
When the two parts of the National Assembly (the House of Representatives and the Senate) meet together, the President leads the meeting. The President also has other key duties:
- They help confirm the King's choices for important roles. These include the head of the Privy Council and the Regent of Thailand.
- They help confirm changes to the rules about who becomes King next.
- They invite the person who will be the next King to take the throne.
- They make sure all votes in the Assembly are properly recorded.
- They can ask the King to call a special meeting of the Assembly.
As Speaker of the House
The President of the National Assembly is also the main leader of the House of Representatives. This is where elected members work. The Speaker makes sure that all laws are made correctly. Two Deputy Speakers help the Speaker.
The Speaker must be fair to everyone. They cannot be a leader in a political party. This rule also applies to their deputies. Some of their duties include:
- Filling empty seats for certain Members of Parliament.
- Giving the King the name of the new Prime Minister to be officially appointed.
- Helping confirm the King's choice for the Leader of the Opposition.
- Being a member of committees that choose judges and other important officials.
Past Presidents of the National Assembly
The President of the National Assembly is usually the Speaker of the House of Representatives. However, in the past, this role was sometimes held by the leader of the upper house (the Senate) or a single chamber.
