A Look Back: History of Port Edwards

A part of Port Edwards town, near the Wisconsin River, was once known as the "Indian strip." This land was sold by the Menominee people to the U.S. government in 1836, as part of the Treaty of the Cedars. Because of this, the area was explored and mapped out early on.

In 1839, a team from the U.S. government surveyed parts of what would become Port Edwards. They walked through the forests and crossed the river, using tools like a chain and a compass to measure the land. Later, in 1851, another group surveyed the boundary lines of the land.

When they described the area that now includes Nekoosa and the village of Port Edwards, they noted that the higher lands were mostly "pine barrens." This meant they had sandy soil and most of the trees had been burned by fires, often set by Native Americans. They also mentioned that the large pine trees, which were good for lumber, were already gone.

They also described the river islands as often flooded and not very useful for farming or timber. The town of Port Edwards was officially created in 1874. It was named after the village of Port Edwards, which is located within its borders.
