Porter Mountain is a cool mountain located in the Adirondack Mountains in New York. It's one of the special mountains known as the Adirondack High Peaks. There are 46 of these peaks, and Porter Mountain is the 38th tallest. It's also known as one of the easier mountains to hike for people trying to climb all 46 peaks, who are called Adirondack Forty-Sixers.
The mountain got its name from Noah Porter. He was one of the first people to climb it back in 1875. Later, he became the president of Yale University, a famous school.

Exploring Porter Mountain
Porter Mountain is often climbed along with another nearby peak, Cascade Mountain. While Porter Mountain doesn't have wide-open, rocky areas like Cascade, it still offers amazing views from its top.
What You Can See
From the summit of Porter Mountain, you can see far and wide. You get a great view of the Johns Brook Valley to the east. This view is special because Porter Mountain actually blocks it if you are on Cascade Mountain. Plus, Porter Mountain is usually less crowded than Cascade, making it a peaceful spot to enjoy nature.
How to Hike Porter Mountain
There are a couple of ways to reach the top of Porter Mountain.
The Cascade Trail Route
One popular way is to start on the trail that leads to Cascade Mountain. About 0.5 miles (0.80 km) before you reach Cascade's summit, you'll find a yellow-blazed trail. This trail turns off and goes down into the valley between the two mountains. From there, it's about 1 mile (1.6 km) to the summit of Porter Mountain.
The Blueberry Mountain Route
You can also hike to Porter Mountain from a different starting point. This route goes over a neighboring mountain called Blueberry Mountain. It starts from Keene Valley. This way involves more uphill climbing and is a longer trip overall. The trailhead for Blueberry Mountain and Porter Mountain is easy to find. It's next to the Marcy Airfield, right off Route 73.
