Caroline, Princess of Wales and Princess Charlotte is a famous painting from 1801. It was created by the British artist Sir Thomas Lawrence. This meant she was next in line to become queen after her father, George, Prince of Wales. George was the oldest son of George III, the king. By 1801, Caroline and her husband, Prince George, were living separately.
About the Painting
This beautiful painting was ordered by Lady Townshend. She was a close helper to Princess Caroline. In the painting, Princess Caroline is tuning a harp. She was taking lessons to learn how to play it. Her daughter, Princess Charlotte, is holding out a sheet of music for her mother. The painting was shown to the public in 1802. It was part of the summer exhibition at the Royal Academy in London. Many people loved the painting when they saw it.
A Closer Look at Its History
The creation of this painting by Thomas Lawrence later became a topic of discussion. During the time Lawrence was working on the portrait, he sometimes stayed at Caroline's home. This was called Montagu House and was located in Blackheath.
In 1806, Princess Caroline's husband, Prince George, had some concerns about her behavior. He started an investigation into her actions. Thomas Lawrence was asked to give a sworn statement, called an affidavit. He did this to make sure his name was cleared. The investigation looked into the matter carefully. In the end, it was decided that there was not enough information to take any further action.
The painting stayed with Princess Caroline until she passed away in 1821. Later, Queen Victoria bought the painting. Queen Victoria was the first cousin of Princess Charlotte. Today, the painting is part of the Royal Collection and can be found at Buckingham Palace in London.
