Portville is a small village in New York State, located in Cattaraugus County. It's in the southern part of the larger Town of Portville, southeast of the city of Olean. In 2020, about 892 people lived in the village.
Village History
The area where Portville is located, along the Allegheny River, was first settled in 1813. The village of Portville officially became a village, or "incorporated," in 1895.
Long ago, a waterway called the Genesee Valley Canal ended here. In 1875, a big fire destroyed many businesses in the village. Two important buildings in Portville, the Portville Free Library and the William E. Wheeler House, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are special places recognized for their history.
Notable People
- Audrey Payne (born March 28, 1984) is known for hiking the entire Appalachian Trail in 2018. She is also a YouTube personality, known as @Audreyadventures, and wrote the book Where the Rhododendrons Bloom (2024).
Geography and Location
Portville is on the east side of the Allegheny River. A stream called Dodge Creek flows through the village and into the river.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village covers about 2.1 square kilometers (0.80 square miles) of land. There is no water area within the village limits.
Two main roads, New York State Route 305 and New York State Route 417, pass through Portville.
