Portville is a town located in Cattaraugus County, New York, in the United States. About 3,504 people lived here in 2020. Its name comes from its history as a busy port. Long ago, people shipped wood and other goods down the Allegheny River from here. The town was officially created in 1837 from a part of the nearby town of Olean.
Portville is in the southeast corner of Cattaraugus County. It is located southeast of the city of Olean. The village of Portville is the largest community within the town.

Portville covers a total area of about 36 square miles (93.3 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 35.6 square miles (92.2 square kilometers), is land. The remaining 0.45 square miles (1.2 square kilometers) is water.
The town is in the very southeast part of Cattaraugus County. Its eastern border touches Allegany County. The southern border is shared with McKean County, Pennsylvania.
The Allegheny River flows through the southern part of the town. Two smaller streams, Oswayo Creek and Dodge Creek, join the Allegheny River here. Oswayo Creek meets the river south of Portville village. Dodge Creek flows into the river within the village itself.
Major roads also cross through Portville. New York State Route 305 runs north and south. New York State Route 417 travels east and west. These roads help people travel in and out of the town.
Neighboring Towns and Areas
Portville shares its borders with several other towns and areas. To the south, in McKean County, Pennsylvania, are Eldred and Ceres townships.
On the eastern side, in Allegany County, you'll find the towns of Clarksville and Genesee. To the west of Portville is the town of Olean. Finally, the town of Hinsdale is located to the north.

Most of the people living in Portville in 2000 were White (97.93%). A smaller number were Black or African American (0.76%). Other groups included Native American (0.15%) and Asian (0.23%). About 0.68% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.
About 34.1% of households had children under 18 living with them. Most households (57.5%) were married couples. About 23.6% of all households were individuals living alone. Many of these were people aged 65 or older.

The town of Portville includes several smaller communities and notable locations:
- Bedford Corners – This is a small community located near the eastern border of the town. You can find it along NY Route 305. The historic area of Bedford Corners was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
- Carroll – Another small community in the southeast part of the town. It is located east of the Allegheny River.
- Haydenville – This community is on the western edge of the town. It is located along County Road 92.
- Lake View Terrace – You can find this community in the northeast part of Portville. It is situated on County Road 27.
- Main Settlement – A community in the southeast corner of the town. It is located on NY Route 417.
- Mill Grove – This community is on the Allegheny River. It is located on Route 305 in the southeast corner of the town. It used to be the southern end of the Genesee Valley Canal.
- Portville – This is the main village within the town of Portville. It is a local government area with about 430 properties and 1,000 people. The village covers over 2 square miles in the southeast part of the town. It is located near Dodge Creek and the Allegheny River. Both NY-305 and NY-417 pass through the village.
- Stephens Lake – A small lake located north of Weston Mills.
- Toll Gate Corner – This is a specific spot in the southeast corner of the town. It is where Route 305 and Route 417 meet.
- Weston Mills – A community on the north bank of the Allegheny River. It is located on Route 417. The community was named after the Weston brothers, who owned many businesses there.
