History of Hinsdale
Hinsdale was officially created in 1820. It was formed next to the town of Olean. The town got its name from Hinsdale, New Hampshire. Later, in 1846, the town of Ischua was formed from part of Hinsdale. Even today, both towns share the same zip code.
How Hinsdale Got Its Name
In 1820, people living in the area wanted to form their own town. They did not want to be part of the town then known as Hamilton (which is now Olean). They asked their representative, Elial Todd Foote, for help. He lived in Jamestown.
The locals wanted to name their new town "Fayette." However, there were already other towns with similar names, like Fayette and Fayetteville. So, the idea for "Fayette" failed. The state government in Albany told Foote he needed to pick a new name quickly.
Foote could not talk to the people back home in Hamilton. So, he had to choose a new name himself. After thinking all night, he decided to name the town after Hinsdale, New Hampshire. This was the place where his mother, Debbie Doolittle Foote, was born. And so, on April 14, 1820, the town of Hinsdale, New York, was officially created.
Changes Over Time
In 1846, the people living in what is now Ischua decided they wanted their own community. They separated from Hinsdale and formed their own town.
