History of Potts Camp
Potts Camp started as a trading post in the mid-1800s. A trading post was like a small store where people could trade goods and supplies. Colonel Erasmus Potts set up this trading post along an old path called the Pontotoc Trail. The town officially became a town in 1912.
Where is Potts Camp?
Potts Camp is in the southeastern part of Marshall County. It shares a border with Benton County to the east. The town is about 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Oxford. You can reach it by following Mississippi Highway 178.
A big highway called Interstate 22 also goes through the northern part of Potts Camp. This highway can take you to Holly Springs, which is 12 miles (19 km) northwest. Holly Springs is the main town for Marshall County, also known as the county seat. If you go southeast on Interstate 22 for about 21 miles (34 km), you'll reach New Albany.
The town covers about 1 square mile (2.5 square kilometers) of land. There's a small stream called Oaklimeter Creek that flows along the southwestern edge of the town. This creek is a branch of the Tippah River.
