Early Life and Education

Poul Lange was born in Frederiksberg, Denmark, in 1956. Frederiksberg is a town located inside the city of Copenhagen. He studied at the Danmarks Designskole (Danish Design School) from 1980 to 1983. He earned a BFA degree with honors.

Moving to the United States

In 1984, Lange traveled to New York City to study at the New York School of Visual Arts. After finishing his studies, he went back to Copenhagen. He worked there as a designer from 1985 to 1989.

In 1989, he moved back to New York City. He worked with famous designers Walter Bernard and Milton Glaser at their company, WBMG. This company focused on designing publications. In 1991, Poul Lange started his own design company called "Poul Lange Design."

In September 2012, Lange and his wife, Kayoko Suzuki-Lange, moved to Los Angeles. There, they started "Chocolate Factory Publishing." This company creates apps for children's books. Their most famous app is The Book of Holes, made for the iPad.

Poul Lange's Creative Work

Designing Book Covers

Poul Lange has designed a huge number of book jackets. He has created hundreds, if not thousands, of covers. Most of these were for publishers in Denmark.

Illustrations for Magazines and Newspapers

Lange's illustrations have appeared in many big US publications. These include Time magazine, New York Times, Washington Post, GQ, and the Boston Globe.

In 2013, he illustrated a book called Storied Sips. This book was about old cocktail recipes. Lange created collages, drink photos, and calligraphy for the book.

Children's Books and Apps

Poul Lange is also a children's book author and creator. His first book for children is Hullebogen, which means The Book of Holes in English. This book is very unique because it has a real hole running through all its pages! This hole is the main focus of all the pictures. Lange came up with the idea, wrote, illustrated, and designed the book. It was published by Gyldendal, a Danish publishing house. The Danish version came out in 2006.

The Book of Holes won an AIGA award in 2006. A judge said it was "an honest presentation of information" with "whimsical drawing."

In 2013, an interactive English version of The Book of Holes was released as an app for the iPad. "Chocolate Factory Publishing" released this digital version.

The Book of Holes app received a Kirkus Star in 2013. This award is given to "Books of Exceptional Merit." Kirkus Reviews called it one of the "Best Book Apps Of 2013." They described the app as "Educational and entertaining." They also said it was "tailor-made to spark stimulating interchanges between younger children and unwary grown-ups."

Fine Art and Teaching
