Prabal Gurung (Nepali: प्रवल गुरुङ) is a famous Nepalese–American fashion designer. He was born in 1979 and now lives in New York City. He is known for his beautiful clothing designs.

Early Life and Learning

Prabal Gurung was born on March 31, 1979, in Singapore. His parents were from Nepal, and he grew up in Kathmandu, Nepal. His mother, Durga Rana, used to own a clothing shop. His older brother, Pravesh Rana Gurung, is a film director in India. His older sister, Kumudini Shrestha, is a teacher and helps people in her community.

Prabal went to a school called St. Xavier's School in Jawalakhel. Before he became a fashion designer, he studied hotel management. He always loved clothes and colors. He started learning about fashion when he moved to New Delhi, India. There, he went to the National Institute of Fashion Technology.

He worked as an assistant at many local fashion and production companies. He also learned from a designer named Manish Arora. Prabal has said that India is "an incredible place" because of its movies, fabrics, and busy streets. Later, he got a chance to help stylists in London and Melbourne. This helped him learn more about fashion around the world.

Fashion Career

Starting Out in Fashion

In 1998, Prabal Gurung moved from New Delhi to New York City. He went to Parsons School of Design to study fashion. While he was there, he worked as an intern for famous designer Donna Karan. After that, he also worked with Cynthia Rowley. Then, he worked for five years as a design director for Bill Blass, another well-known designer.

The Prabal Gurung Brand

Prabal Gurung launched his own fashion collection, called PRABAL GURUNG, in February 2009. He showed his designs during Fashion Week. He has designed clothes for important people like former First Lady Michelle Obama and the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton.

In 2011, Prabal Gurung became the main designer for ICB collections in Europe. He also designed new uniforms for all the beauty advisers at Sephora stores in North America. This was the first time Sephora changed its uniforms since 2001. He has also worked on special collections with other big brands. These include Lane Bryant (in 2017), Target (in 2013), and MAC Cosmetics (in 2014).

Helping Others

Besides his work as a fashion designer, Prabal Gurung also helps people. He started the Shikshya Foundation in Nepal in 2012. This program helps children who do not have many opportunities. So far, it has helped over sixty students. The Shikshya Foundation also holds workshops for teachers. These workshops help teachers teach students reading, writing, math, and how to manage money. To help people know about his project, he worked with Toms in 2016.

Prabal Gurung also joined the "Stop Asian Hate" campaign. This group works to stop hate and unfair treatment against people of Asian descent.

Awards and Recognitions

Prabal Gurung has received many awards for his work in fashion. In 2011, he won the Ecco Domani Fashion Fund Award. He was also nominated for the 2010 CFDA/Swarovski Womenswear Award. He was chosen by important fashion experts to be part of the CFDA Fashion Incubator from 2010 to 2012.

In November 2010, he was a runner-up for the 2010 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. He was also a finalist for the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award in 2012. In 2011, he won the CFDA Swarovski Award for Womenswear. He also won the Drawing Award from the Creativity Center in 2015.
