Prairie View is a small place in northeastern Illinois. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's not officially a town or city with its own government. Instead, it's managed by the county and a local township.
Prairie View is located in southern Lake County. It's part of Vernon Township, and for many years, the main building for Vernon Township was right here in Prairie View.
Even though nearby towns like Lincolnshire and Buffalo Grove have grown, Prairie View has mostly stayed independent. Only tiny parts of it have been taken over by these bigger towns.

How Prairie View Developed
In recent years, Prairie View has changed a bit. The towns around it have grown and taken over some nearby areas. This has caused Prairie View to be split into two main sections.
Northern Prairie View
The northern part of Prairie View is home to the Prairie View Metra train station. It's also close to Stevenson High School. This area is surrounded by Vernon Hills to the north, Lincolnshire to the east, and Buffalo Grove to the south and west.
Residents in this section get their water, sewer, and fire services from Lincolnshire. Other services, like road maintenance, come from Vernon Township and Lake County. A modern neighborhood called Krisview Acres was built here in the 1990s. Before that, it was farmland. The older homes in this area, mostly on Easton Avenue and Main Street, were built over many years, from the late 1800s to the early 1980s.
Southern Prairie View
The other part of Prairie View is a short distance south. This section is completely surrounded by Buffalo Grove. It's a neighborhood known as Horatio Gardens. This area is also near the Buffalo Grove train station. The people living in Horatio Gardens have worked hard to stay an independent part of unincorporated Prairie View. They have resisted being taken over by the Buffalo Grove Park District.
Who Lives in Prairie View
Prairie View was once mostly made up of white or Caucasian residents. However, since the 1990s, it has become much more diverse. Today, it has a very large Jewish population. A well-known Chabad shul (which is a Jewish house of worship) is located in Prairie View.
