The Premier Ultimate League (PUL) is a professional sports league for ultimate disc. It started in 2019. The PUL wants to make the sport of ultimate fair for everyone. This means making it easier for women, transgender, and non-binary people to play. They also want to show off their amazing skills.
The league works to have many different kinds of players. This includes people of all genders, races, and backgrounds. Players in the PUL get paid $40 for each game they play. The PUL is a special type of non-profit group. This means they use their money to help the league grow, not to make a profit for owners. They have raised money through a "Sponsor-A-Player" program. This program helps players by getting donations from supporters.
How the League Started
The Premier Ultimate League began in 2019 with eight teams. The very first championship was won by the Medellin Revolution team.
In 2020, four new teams joined the league. The league was then split into two groups: Central and East. However, the 2020 season had to be cancelled. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Because of the pandemic, the PUL had a smaller season in 2021. Games were played over three weekends in August. These events took place in New York, Milwaukee, and Portland, Maine. The Raleigh Radiance, Milwaukee Monarchs, and Medellin Revolution teams won these events.
Starting in 2022, the league was divided into three groups. These were the Midwest, South, and East divisions. The Medellin Revolution won their second championship in 2022. They beat the DC Shadow in the final game.
In December 2022, it was announced that the Medellin team would leave the PUL. They joined a new league in Latin America. The Philadelphia Surge team took their place in the PUL.
Ultimate Game Rules
The PUL uses a mix of rules from different ultimate organizations. These include USA Ultimate rules and World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) rules. They also use some rules from the Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA).
The playing field is 80 yards long and 40 yards wide. There are also 20-yard end zones at each end. Games have four quarters, each lasting 12 minutes. There are short breaks between quarters and a 10-minute halftime.
At the end of the first three quarters, play stops when the current throw is finished. In the last quarter and overtime, play ends exactly when the clock runs out. If the game is tied after the first overtime, a second overtime happens. The first team to score in this second overtime wins the game.
PUL games are played without traditional referees. Instead, players call their own fouls and rules. They get help from "observers." Observers help make calls about the disc going out of bounds or players being offsides. They also watch for delays in the game.
Players must discuss fouls quickly. They have only 10 seconds to talk before asking an observer for help. Observers also have 10 seconds to make a decision. If they can't decide, the play is considered "contested."
Teams can call time-outs to change players on the field. A time-out also resets the "stall count" to zero. This is a count that a defensive player makes while guarding the thrower.
The PUL also has a "player overrule" option. This means players can change a call that was made in their team's favor. They can do this if they think the call was wrong or unfair. This helps keep the game fair and honest.
