The President of the Chamber of Deputies of Romania is an important leader in Romania's government. This person is a member of the Chamber of Deputies, which is like one of the two main groups of lawmakers in the country. Think of it as the "lower house" of the Parliament.
The President of the Chamber of Deputies leads meetings and helps make sure everything runs smoothly. They are also in charge of the Standing Bureau, a special group that manages the Chamber's work. This role is very important because the President of the Chamber of Deputies is second in line to become the temporary President of Romania, right after the President of the Senate.

How the President is Chosen
The President of the Chamber of Deputies is chosen by other lawmakers.
The Election Process
The members of the Chamber of Deputies vote for their president. This vote is done secretly. To win, a candidate needs to get more than half of all the votes. If no one gets enough votes in the first round, the top two candidates have a second vote. The person who gets the most votes in this second round wins the election. The last election for this position happened in November 2021.
What the President Does
The President of the Chamber of Deputies has several key responsibilities. These tasks help the Chamber work well and represent Romania.
- Calls Meetings: The President decides when the Chamber of Deputies will meet for regular or special sessions.
- Leads Discussions: They lead the meetings of the Chamber, making sure rules are followed.
- Represents the Chamber: The President speaks for the Chamber of Deputies when dealing with the President, the Senate, the Government, and the Constitutional Court.
- International Relations: They also represent the Chamber of Deputies when dealing with other countries.
- Temporary President: If the President of Romania cannot do their job, and the President of the Senate also cannot, the President of the Chamber of Deputies steps in as a temporary President. They continue to lead the Chamber while also acting as the country's temporary leader. This temporary role lasts until a new President is elected or the original President returns.
A Look at History
The role of the leader of Romania's lower house has changed names over time.
Early Years (1862–1948)
From 1862 to 1948, the lower house was known as the Assembly of Deputies. For a short period, starting in 1946, the Parliament became a single body, meaning there was no separate Senate.
Communist Era (1948–1989)
During this time, the legislative body was called the Great National Assembly.
Rebuilding Democracy (1990–1992)
After 1989, Romania's government changed. The legislative body became two-sided again, with two houses. The lower house was once more called the Assembly of Deputies. This assembly was part of a larger group that also worked to write Romania's new constitution. An elected president led this assembly.
Modern Era (1992–Present)
Once the new Constitution was approved, the Assembly of Deputies changed its name to the Chamber of Deputies. Since then, it has been led by a president, just like it is today.
