Ludovic Orban (born May 25, 1963) is a Romanian engineer and politician. He served as the prime minister of Romania from November 2019 to December 2020. He was also the leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL) from 2017 to 2021. Later, he became the minister of transport from April 2007 to December 2008.
From 2008 to 2016, he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies for Bucharest. He returned to the Chamber of Deputies after the 2020 Romanian legislative election. Soon after, he was chosen as the president of the Chamber of Deputies of Romania. He left this role in October 2021. In December 2021, he started a new political party called the Force of the Right (FD).

Biography
Early Life and Education
Ludovic Orban was born in Brașov, a city in the Transylvania region of Romania. His father was of Hungarian background, and his mother was Romanian. He was raised in the Unitarian Church of Transylvania, which was his father's religion. He can speak some Hungarian.
Orban finished high school at Andrei Șaguna National College (Brașov) in 1982. He then studied industrial machinery design at the Transilvania University of Brașov, graduating in 1988. In 1993, he completed further studies in political science.
Early Career and Political Start
From 1988 to 1990, Orban trained as an engineer at a factory. He continued working as an engineer in Brașov from 1990 to 1991. After that, he worked as a writer for a newspaper. Between 1997 and 2001, he held various government jobs. He also worked with a foundation that helps children.
Orban began his political career as a local councillor for Sector 3 (Bucharest) from 1992 to 1996. He was also an advisor for the Liberal Party 1993 (PL '93). This party later joined the main National Liberal Party (PNL) in 1998. From 2004 to 2007, he served as the deputy mayor of Bucharest.

He became the Minister of Transport in April 2007. He held this position until his party lost the 2008 Romanian legislative election. In 2008, he ran for mayor of Bucharest but did not win. In 2009, he became the vice president of the PNL party. He later ran for party president in 2014 but was not elected. In 2016, he withdrew from the race for mayor of Bucharest after an investigation began. However, in January 2017, a court found him innocent. The next month, he ran for PNL leadership again and won.
Time as Prime Minister and New Party
In October 2019, President Klaus Iohannis chose Orban to be the prime minister. His government was approved by the parliament the next month. However, his government was removed by a no-confidence vote in February 2020.

A new government led by Orban was approved in March 2020. Many politicians, including Orban, were not present due to concerns about COVID-19. Orban resigned in December 2020 after his party did not perform well in the 2020 Romanian legislative election. He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies again. When the new parliament met, he was chosen as its president.
In 2021, Orban tried to be re-elected as PNL president. He focused on traditional values during his campaign. In September, he lost the election to Florin Cîțu. He then resigned as Chamber president. In November, the PNL party removed Orban from the party. The next month, he started a new political party called Force of the Right (FD).
Family Life
Ludovic Orban is married to Mihaela Orban, and they have one son. His brother, Leonard Orban, used to be a European Commissioner. Ludovic Orban has mentioned that sharing a last name with Viktor Orbán (the Prime Minister of Hungary) is sometimes a source of confusion for him.
