Meet Ludovic Orban
Early Life and Education
Ludovic Orban was born in Brașov, a city in the Transylvania region of Romania. His father was of Hungarian background, and his mother was Romanian. He learned to speak some Hungarian.
He finished high school in Brașov in 1982. Then, he studied industrial machinery design at the University of Brașov, graduating in 1988. In 1993, he continued his studies in political science in Bucharest.
His Early Career
From 1988 to 1990, Ludovic Orban trained as an engineer at a factory. He worked as an engineer in Brașov from 1990 to 1991. For a short time, he also wrote for a newspaper. Later, he worked in various government roles from 1997 to 2001. He also helped a foundation called "Children, the light of the world."
His Journey in Politics

Ludovic Orban started his political career as a local councillor in Bucharest from 1992 to 1996. He was an advisor for the Liberal Party 1993 (PL '93), which later joined the main National Liberal Party (PNL).
In 1998, he became part of the PNL's national council. He led the PNL branch in Bucharest starting in 2002. From 2004 to 2007, he served as the Deputy Mayor of Bucharest.
He became the Minister of Transport in 2007. He held this position until his party lost the 2008 elections. In 2008, he also ran for mayor of Bucharest but did not win. In 2009, he became the vice president of the PNL. He ran for the party's top job in 2014 but was defeated.
In 2016, he planned to run for mayor of Bucharest again. However, he stepped down from the race and his party roles due to an investigation. In 2017, he was cleared of the charges. The next month, he ran for PNL leadership again and won.
As Prime Minister

In October 2019, President Klaus Iohannis chose Ludovic Orban to be the new Prime Minister. His government was approved by Parliament the next month.
In February 2020, his government was removed by a vote of no confidence. However, a new government led by Orban was approved in March 2020. Many politicians, including Orban, were not present due to concerns about COVID-19. The Social Democrats (PSD) voted for the new government because of the emergency situation.
Orban resigned as Prime Minister in December 2020. This happened after the PNL did not perform well in the parliamentary elections. However, he won a new term as a member of the Chamber of Deputies. When the new parliament met, he was elected its president.
After PNL Leadership
In 2021, Ludovic Orban tried to get re-elected as the leader of the PNL. He focused on traditional values during his campaign. In September, he lost the election to Florin Cîțu. Soon after, he resigned from his role as President of the Chamber of Deputies.
In November, the PNL leadership removed Orban from the party. The next month, he started a new political party called Force of the Right (FD). This new party is considered a centre-right group.
Personal Life
Ludovic Orban is married to Mihaela Orban, and they have one son. His brother, Leonard Orban, used to be a European Commissioner. Ludovic Orban has mentioned that sharing a last name with Viktor Orbán (the Prime Minister of Hungary) is sometimes confusing for him.
