Viorica Dăncilă (born on 16 December 1963) is a Romanian politician. She was the leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD). From January 2018 to November 2019, she served as the Prime Minister of Romania. She was the first woman in Romania's history to be both Prime Minister and the head of the PSD party.

Before becoming Prime Minister, Viorica Dăncilă was a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). She was elected twice, in 2009 and 2014, representing the PSD. She also led the Social Democratic Women's Organization (OFSD) from 2015 to 2018.

Dăncilă joined the Social Democratic Party (PSD) in 1996. She held various roles within the party and local government. She was a local and county councilor before becoming an MEP. She also held leadership positions in the party's local branches. In 2022, she left the PSD to join a new party called Nation People Together, becoming its president. In September 2024, she joined the Romanian National Conservative Party.

Before her political career, Dăncilă worked as an engineer at Petrom SA. She also taught at Videle Industrial High School.

Early Life and Education

Vasilica Viorica Dăncilă was born on 16 December 1963. Her birthplace was Roșiorii de Vede in Teleorman County, Romania.

In 1988, she finished her studies at the Institute of Petroleum and Gas in Ploiești. She studied drilling and hydrocarbon exploitation. Later, in 2006, Dăncilă earned a master's degree. She studied European Public Space at the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration in Bucharest.

Political Journey

Serving in the European Parliament

In 2009, Viorica Dăncilă was elected as a member of the European Parliament (MEP). She was on the list of the Social Democratic Party (PSD). She joined the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats group. During her first five-year term, she did not write any reports as a main legislator.

In 2014, Viorica Dăncilă was elected for a second term as an MEP. She led the Romanian Social Democrat group in the European Parliament. She was also a vice chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development. She was a full member of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality. She was also a substitute member of the Committee on Regional Development.

She was recognized for her work as an MEP. In 2015, she was nominated for the MEP Awards in the Agriculture category. In 2017, she was nominated again in two categories. These were Women's Rights & Gender Equality and Research & Innovation.

Viorica Dăncilă left the European Parliament on 28 January 2018. She did this to become the Prime Minister of Romania.

Leading Social Democratic Women

In 2015, Viorica Dăncilă led an important effort. As acting chairwoman of the Social Democratic Women's Organization (OFSD), she proposed a plan. This plan aimed to protect women from domestic violence. The proposal was made at the OFSD Summer School in Mamaia.

In October 2015, she was elected President of the OFSD. As president, Viorica Dăncilă asked PSD leaders to include more women in elections. She requested that at least 30% of candidates be women. The PSD leadership approved this idea.

Becoming Prime Minister

On 17 January 2018, Liviu Dragnea, the PSD leader, nominated Viorica Dăncilă. She was chosen to be Romania's first female prime minister. She was the third head of government in Romania in just one year. The previous Prime Minister, Mihai Tudose, had resigned.

President Klaus Iohannis accepted the PSD's choice. He appointed Dăncilă as the new prime minister. Her government, known as the Dăncilă Cabinet, received approval from Parliament on 29 January.

She was removed from her position as prime minister on 10 October 2019. This happened after a vote of no confidence in Parliament. She continued to manage the office until a new government was formed.

In March 2022, Viorica Dăncilă left the PSD party. She joined a newly formed party called Nation People Together (NOI). Three months later, she became the president of NOI. In September 2024, she joined the Romanian National Conservative Party.

Family Life

Viorica Dăncilă is married to Cristinel Dăncilă. He works as a manager at an oil company. He was also a councilor in the Teleorman County Council. Viorica Dăncilă has an adopted son named Victor.
