Viorica Dăncilă (born 16 December 1963) is a Romanian politician. She was the Prime Minister of Romania from January 2018 to November 2019. She was the first woman in Romania's history to hold this important position. She also led the Social Democratic Party (PSD).
Before becoming Prime Minister, Viorica Dăncilă was a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). She represented Romania in the European Parliament from 2009 to 2018. She also led the Social Democratic Women's Organization (OFSD) from 2015 to 2018.
Dăncilă joined the Social Democratic Party (PSD) in 1996. She held various roles within the party and local government. She was a local and county councilor before becoming an MEP. In 2022, she left the PSD and joined a new party called Nation People Together. She became its president. In September 2024, she joined the Romanian National Conservative Party.
Before her political career, Dăncilă worked as an engineer at Petrom SA. She was also a teacher at Videle Industrial High School.

Early Life and Education
Viorica Dăncilă was born on 16 December 1963 in Roșiorii de Vede, Teleorman County, Romania. In 1988, she finished her studies at the Institute of Petroleum and Gas in Ploiești. She studied how to drill wells and use oil and gas deposits. Later, in 2006, she earned a master's degree in European Public Space from the National School of Political and Administrative Studies in Bucharest.
Political Career
Working in the European Parliament
In 2009, Viorica Dăncilă was elected as a member of the European Parliament (MEP). She was part of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and joined the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats group.
In 2014, she was elected for another term as an MEP. She became the leader of the Romanian Social Democrat group in the European Parliament. She was also a vice-chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development. She was a member of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality. She also served as a substitute member of the Committee on Regional Development.
In 2015, she was recognized for her work in agriculture. In 2017, she was nominated again for her work in women's rights and gender equality, and in research and innovation. She left the European Parliament on 28 January 2018 to become Romania's Prime Minister.
Leading the Social Democratic Women's Organization
In 2015, Viorica Dăncilă, as the acting leader of the Social Democratic Women's Organization (OFSD), proposed a plan to protect women from domestic violence. This idea was discussed at a summer school event.
In October 2015, she was elected President of the OFSD. As president, she asked the PSD leaders to make sure that at least 30% of their candidates in elections were women. The party leadership agreed to this proposal.
Becoming Prime Minister
On 17 January 2018, the Social Democratic Party chose Viorica Dăncilă to be Romania's first female prime minister. She was the third person to hold this role in just one year. The previous Prime Minister, Mihai Tudose, had resigned. President Klaus Iohannis approved her nomination. Her government received approval from the Parliament on 29 January.
She served as Prime Minister until 10 October 2019, when the Parliament decided she should no longer be Prime Minister. She continued to manage the government for a short time until a new government was formed.
In March 2022, after a break from politics, she announced she was leaving the PSD. She joined a new party called Nation People Together (NOI) and became its president three months later. In September 2024, she joined the Romanian National Conservative Party.
Personal Life
Viorica Dăncilă is married to Cristinel Dăncilă. He works as a manager at an oil company and used to be a councilor in the Teleorman County Council. They have an adopted son named Victor.
