History of Preston
Early Days and Railroads
Preston was officially started in 1887. In the same year, a major railway line was built through Preston. This line connected Herington to Pratt. The railway was later extended to Liberal in 1888. Eventually, it reached as far as Tucumcari, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas.
The original railway company faced financial trouble and was taken over by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway. Even though the railway changed hands many times over the years, many local people still call it the "Rock Island" line. Preston also had its own post office, which operated from 1887 until 1990.
Preston's New Beginning
For a while, Preston was thought to be a shrinking city. However, it is now seeing a new wave of growth and development. New businesses have started to open, helping to bring more activity and jobs to the area. This includes a mortuary, a fabric store, a used car lot, a diner, and a convenience store. This new energy is helping Preston to become a lively place once again.
