Prince Hisahito of Akishino (悠仁親王, Hisahito Shinnō, born 6 September 2006) is the youngest child and only son of Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko of Japan. He is the nephew of Emperor Naruhito. Prince Hisahito is also second in line to the Japanese throne, right after his father, Fumihito.
Before Prince Hisahito was born, there weren't many boys in the Japanese imperial family. This led to discussions about changing the rules for who could become emperor or empress. For a long time, Japan has followed a rule called agnatic primogeniture. This means only males can inherit the throne. There have been a few exceptions, with eight empresses ruling in the past. But the current law says only men can become emperor.
Prince Hisahito's birth in 2006 changed these discussions. It meant there was a new male heir in the family. Because of his birth, there was no longer an immediate need to change the old rules about who inherits the throne.

His Birth
Prince Hisahito was born on 6 September 2006, at 8:27 AM in Tokyo, Japan. He was born a little early due to some complications during the pregnancy.
Hisahito is the youngest of three children. He is the only son of Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko. He has two older sisters, Mako Komuro and Princess Kako of Akishino. The public first saw him on 15 September 2006, when he left the hospital.
His father chose the name Hisahito for him. The Imperial Household Agency, which manages the affairs of the imperial family, said his name means "serene and virtuous." Another way to translate it is "virtuous, calm, everlasting."
Prince Hisahito was the first boy born into the Imperial House of Japan since his own father was born in 1965. After Hisahito's birth, discussions about changing the law to allow women to inherit the throne became less urgent. This is because there was now a male heir.
His Education
In the spring of 2010, Prince Hisahito started kindergarten. He went to a school connected with Ochanomizu University in Tokyo. On 14 December 2012, the Imperial Household Agency announced he would go to Ochanomizu University Elementary School. This allowed him to stay with many of his friends from kindergarten.
This made Prince Hisahito the first member of the Imperial House of Japan to go to a school other than Gakushūin Primary School. Gakushūin is a school that many members of the imperial family have attended. By his second year, reports said he was doing well in school. He helped look after younger students and played with his friends.
In April 2019, Prince Hisahito began attending Ochanomizu University Junior High School.
In August 2019, he traveled with his parents on an official visit to the country of Bhutan.
In March 2021, he won a second-place prize. This was in the junior high student category of Kitakyushu's 12th Children's Nonfiction Literature Awards. In February 2022, there were questions about his essay for the award. The essay was about his trip to the Ogasawara islands. The Imperial Household Agency and Prince Hisahito said that the essay's references were "inadequate." They also said the prince would contact the award organizers to make changes. The award was not taken away from him.
