Joséphine-Charlotte, Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, was born Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium on 11 October 1927. She became the Grand Duchess consort of Luxembourg when she married Grand Duke Jean. A "consort" is the spouse of a ruling monarch.
She was the first child of King Leopold III of Belgium. Her brothers were the late King Baudouin and former King Albert II. This also made her the aunt of the current King of Belgium, King Philippe. She was also a first cousin to King Harald V of Norway.
Joséphine-Charlotte passed away on 10 January 2005, at the age of 77. She died at Fischbach Castle in Luxembourg due to lung cancer.

Joséphine-Charlotte Stéphanie Ingeborg Elisabeth Marie-José Marguerite Astrid was born in Brussels, Belgium. Her father was King Leopold III, and her mother was Queen Astrid. She grew up as a princess in the Belgian royal family.
Her family was very important in Europe. She was connected to many other royal families. Her brothers later became kings of Belgium.
Marriage and Role in Luxembourg
On 9 April 1953, Princess Joséphine-Charlotte married Prince Jean of Luxembourg. He later became the Grand Duke. As his wife, she took on the important role of Grand Duchess consort.
She supported her husband in his duties. She also represented Luxembourg at many events. Together, they had five children. These children include the current Grand Duke, Grand Duke Henri.
Life as Grand Duchess
Joséphine-Charlotte was Grand Duchess consort from 12 November 1964 until 7 October 2000. During this time, she was involved in many social and cultural activities. She worked to help people in Luxembourg.
She was known for her dedication to her country. She also had a strong interest in the arts and culture. She helped promote Luxembourg's heritage.
Later Years and Legacy
After her husband, Grand Duke Jean, stepped down in 2000, Joséphine-Charlotte became the Dowager Grand Duchess. She continued to be a respected figure. She passed away in 2005.
Her funeral was held on 15 January 2005. She was buried at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Luxembourg City. She is remembered for her service and commitment to Luxembourg.
