A Look at Prospect's Past
Prospect started as a town focused on logging, which is cutting down trees for wood. The first sawmill in the area opened in 1870.
The community first had a post office in 1882. It was called "Deskins" after the first person in charge of the post office. In 1888, there was even a mill called Deskins Sawmill.
The name of the community changed to "Prospect" in 1889. This happened because people planned to build a railroad along the Rogue River. They hoped this would bring good "prospects" or opportunities to the town.
The historic Prospect Hotel opened in 1892. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This means it's an important building with a lot of history.
