The Province of Benevento (which in Italian is Provincia di Benevento) is a special area in Italy. It is like a county or a state. This province is part of the Campania region. The main city, or capital, of the province is Benevento.

Geography of Benevento Province

This province covers an area of about 2,071 square kilometers. That's roughly 800 square miles. As of 2017, about 279,308 people lived here.

Towns and Cities

The Province of Benevento has 78 smaller towns and villages. These are called comuni in Italy. The largest towns in the province have more than 10,000 people. These big towns include Benevento, Montesarchio, Sant'Agata de' Goti, and San Giorgio del Sannio.

Borders and Mountains

The shape of the Province of Benevento is very similar to an old area called the Principality of Benevento. This was a powerful region many centuries ago.

The province shares its borders with several other areas. To the north, it borders Molise, specifically the province of Campobasso. To the east, it touches Apulia and the province of Foggia. South of Benevento, you'll find the province of Avellino and the metropolitan City of Naples. To the west, it borders the province of Caserta.

The lowest place in the province is in a town called Limatola. It is only 44 meters (about 144 feet) above sea level. The highest point is Monte Mutria. This mountain is 1,822 meters (about 5,978 feet) tall. Monte Mutria is part of the Matese mountain range. This mountain range helps separate the Province of Benevento from the Molise region.
