Prue is a small town in Osage County, Oklahoma, United States. In 2010, 465 people lived there. This was a small increase from 433 people in 2000. The town got its name from Henry Prue, who owned the land where it first started. Prue had to move to a new spot when Lake Keystone was built. Because of this, people sometimes call it "New Prue."
History of Prue
Prue began as a small settlement. In 1902–03, a railroad line was built through the area. This railroad helped connect Prue to other towns. The Prue post office opened in September 1905. People started buying land in the town at an auction on March 22, 1911.
Around 1911, people started looking for oil near Prue. In 1920, the Prue Field opened, which became a big source of natural gas. Other oil fields nearby, like East Osage City and Twin Creek, still produce oil and gas today.
Construction on the Keystone Dam began in 1956. By 1964, when the dam was finished, a new lake called Lake Keystone formed. This lake covered 90 percent of the original town of Prue. Because of the lake, railroad service to Prue stopped in 1964.
Geography of Prue
Prue is located about 46 miles (74 km) south of Pawhuska. It is also about 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Tulsa. The town sits on the Arkansas River part of Lake Keystone.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town covers an area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2). All of this area is land.
Prue is known as "New Prue" because its first location is now underwater. This happened when Lake Keystone was created after the Keystone Dam was finished in 1964.
