The Psorothamnus spinosus, often called the smokethorn or smoketree, is a special plant. It is a type of legume tree that lives for many years. You can find it in the hot deserts of North America. People also call it corona de Cristo.
Where the Smokethorn Grows
The smokethorn tree loves to grow in desert areas. It is native to places like the Colorado Desert in Southern California. You can also find it in the Sonoran Desert in western Arizona. It grows across much of eastern Baja California state. This includes islands in the northern Gulf of California.
Smoketree in Parks and Rivers
This tree is very common in Joshua Tree National Park. Here, it is simply known as the smoketree. Its range stretches along the Lower Colorado River Valley. It goes northwest into the eastern Mojave Desert. It also reaches west into the Colorado Desert. East of the Colorado River, it grows in Arizona's Sonoran Desert.
In Baja California, the smokethorn grows near the western Gulf of California. It is found on islands like Isla Ángel de la Guarda. In Arizona, it grows along rivers like the Bill Williams River and the Gila River. You can even see it in the very southern part of Nevada.
