Puerto Cisnes is a small town and seaport in Chile. Its name means "port of swans" in Spanish, referring to the black-necked swans found there. This town is located in the Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Region, which is part of the Chilean Patagonia.
Puerto Cisnes sits on the Puyuhuapi Channel, right where the Cisnes River flows out. It's in the northwest part of the Aysén Region, an area famous for its many islands, fjords, and water channels.

Exploring the Area Around Puerto Cisnes
The region around Puerto Cisnes is full of natural beauty. It has many islands and deep, narrow inlets of the sea called fjords.
Islands and Channels
A major island nearby is Magdalena Island. This island is home to a national park named after it: Isla Magdalena National Park. The area is also divided by the Moraleda Channel, a long waterway.
National Parks and Mountains
Part of Queulat National Park is found in this area, stretching across the border of the Cisnes commune. Much of the land here is covered with thick, green plants and trees. The main mountain in the area is the Melimoyu volcano.

Puerto Cisnes has an oceanic climate. This means it gets a lot of rain throughout the year. Summers are mild, and winters are cool but not usually freezing.
Getting to Puerto Cisnes
To reach Puerto Cisnes, you need to turn off the famous Carretera Austral road. The town is about 30 kilometers (about 18 miles) from this main highway.
Roads into Town
The town has two main ways to enter. One road has been recently improved, especially for the many tourists who visit. The other road is older and has more bumps.
Central Location
Puerto Cisnes is considered the main town, or capital, of the Cisnes Commune. This commune has about 5,000 people. The town's location is very central. It's right in the middle of nearby peninsulas like Puerto Gala and Puerto Gaviota. Since people in this region often travel by sea, Puerto Cisnes has easy access to other ports in the commune.
The town is also located 196 kilometers (about 122 miles) from the city of Coyhaique.
What People Do for Work in Puerto Cisnes
The main ways people earn a living in Puerto Cisnes are through the salmon industry and trade. The many rivers in the area make salmon farming a good business.
Tourism and Services
In recent years, tourism has grown a lot, especially during the summer. Many people now offer services for visitors. These include adventure activities, guided hikes, and personal tours. There are also many places to stay, like hotels, cabins, and hostels.
Other Jobs in Town
The town also has restaurants, gas stations, and a bank. Other important jobs include local volunteer firefighters, staff at the Hospital Jorge Ibar, and police officers from the Carabineros de Chile. The Armada de Chile also has a base right off the coast.
