A Look at Punta Arenas
Punta Arenas is a part of Vieques, Puerto Rico, which is an island near the main island of Puerto Rico. Even though it's a specific area, the last count in 2010 found that it had zero residents. This means it's mostly undeveloped land or natural areas.
How Punta Arenas Became Part of the U.S.
The history of Punta Arenas is connected to the history of all of Puerto Rico. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an "unincorporated territory" of the United States. This means it's a part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
Early Population Counts
Soon after, in 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count, called a census, across Puerto Rico. This census helped them learn about the people living there.
The count showed that the combined population for Punta Arenas and two other nearby barrios, Puerto Ferro and Puerto Diablo, was 879 people. This was a long time ago, and things have changed since then, leading to the current population of zero in Punta Arenas itself.
