A Look at Puerto Diablo's Past
How Puerto Diablo Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico, including Puerto Diablo, was once controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States government did a count of the people living in Puerto Rico. They found that Puerto Diablo, along with two other barrios named Puerto Ferro and Punta Arenas, had a combined population of 879 people.
