Puerto Ferro is a small area, called a barrio, located on the island of Vieques in Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 705 people lived there. It's known for its beautiful coastal views and quiet atmosphere.
A Glimpse into Puerto Ferro's Past
Puerto Ferro, like the rest of Puerto Rico, has an interesting history. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. From then on, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States.
A year later, in 1899, the United States Department of War counted the people living in Puerto Rico. They found that Puerto Ferro, along with two nearby areas called Punta Arenas and Puerto Diablo, had a total of 879 residents. Over the years, the number of people living in Puerto Ferro has changed, as you can see in the census information below.
