The Puyehue Hot Springs (called Termas de Puyehue in Spanish) are a group of warm water springs. They are found in the Los Lagos Region of southern Chile. These springs are about 76 kilometers (47 miles) east of Osorno, a city near Puerto Montt. You can get there by Route 215-CH or by flying to Refugio del Lago Airport.
What are Puyehue Hot Springs?
The Puyehue Hot Springs are located inside Puyehue National Park. This park is a huge protected area, covering 117,000 hectares (about 289,000 acres).
The main place to enjoy the hot springs is the Puyehue Hotel and Spa. It is found at the base of the Casablanca Volcano. The hot water comes from five different natural sources deep underground. The water temperature ranges from 41 to 54 °C (106 to 129 °F) (106 to 129 degrees Fahrenheit).
Other fun places nearby include the Aguas Calientes Hot Springs. There is also the Antillanca ski resort for winter sports.
History of the Hot Springs
The story of the Puyehue Hot Springs goes back to 1907. At that time, a group of people led by Conrado Hubach decided to make the hot springs better for visitors.
By 1910, a hotel was built that could hold 100 guests. An old steamboat would take visitors across Puyehue Lake. It carried them from the town of El Desague (now called Entre Lagos) to Puyehue Beach. This steamboat was used for over 30 years!
In the 1940s, a new, more modern hotel was built. It was called Gran Hotel Puyehue and covered a large area of land.
Things to Do at Puyehue
The Puyehue Hot Springs offer many activities for visitors. You can swim in indoor and outdoor pools. There are also saunas and hydro massages, which use water to relax your body. The spa offers many different services to help you feel good.
Outside, you can go horseback riding and trekking. Mountain biking is also a popular activity. It's a great place for ecotourism, which means enjoying nature in a way that protects it.
