Pysht is a small place in Clallam County, Washington, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it's a town that doesn't have its own local government. Pysht is located on the Olympic Peninsula, right near where the Pysht River meets the sea.

Pysht's Past

Early Days and Settlers

Long ago, the area where Pysht is now was home to a village of the Klallam people. They lived there for many years. In the 1860s, people from Europe and other parts of America started to arrive.

Logging and a Company Town

A company called Merrill and Ring bought land in the Pysht Valley in 1886. They wanted to cut down trees for wood, which is called logging. They built logging camps and even created a special kind of town called a company town in Pysht. This town was built and run by the logging company.

At its busiest, Pysht was home to about 500 people. It had many important buildings and services. There was a post office for sending mail, a company store where people could buy things, and a schoolhouse for children. The town also had a hospital, an electric plant for power, a movie hall for entertainment, and a port for ships.

Changes Over Time

In 1920, a county road was finished, which made it easier to get to Pysht. This road is now known as State Route 112. Sadly, in the 1920s, the original Klallam village was removed to make space for a new lumber mill. Many of the Klallam residents were working elsewhere at the time.

Where is Pysht?

Pysht is located right on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This is a large body of water that separates Washington state from Canada. The Pysht River flows into this strait right near the community.

You can reach Pysht by using State Route 112. Just east of Pysht, you'll find Pillar Point County Park. It's a great spot to visit and enjoy nature.
