Quay is a small place in Quay County, New Mexico, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that doesn't have its own official local government like a city or town. Quay is about 15 miles (24 km) south of Tucumcari. You can find it along New Mexico State Road 209.
History of Quay
People started settling in the area around Quay in about 1902. In 1904, the community officially got its name when a post office was opened there.
The name "Quay" was chosen to honor Matthew S. Quay. He was a brave soldier in the American Civil War. Later, he became a U.S. Senator for Pennsylvania in 1887. While he was a senator, Matthew Quay strongly supported New Mexico becoming a state. People in New Mexico really liked his efforts. New Mexico officially became the 47th state in the United States on January 6, 1912.
Sometime before 1926, the community of Quay moved about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) to the northwest. It moved to its current spot near the new New Mexico State Highway 209. This highway goes through a wide area called Quay Valley.
