The Story of Queenstown

How Queenstown Began

Queenstown was started in 1888 by a person named Edward Dawson. He was a surveyor, which means he was someone who measured and mapped out land. Edward Dawson first came to this area when he was mapping it as part of a big project called the Dominion Land Survey.

After his work, he went back to England. There, he created a company called the Queenstown Colonization Company. He announced that he would build a new settlement and name it Queenstown.

Early Challenges and Growth

Edward Dawson rented sixteen sections of land in Queenstown. He also built the very first house there. However, the new settlement faced some tough times early on.

First, there was a big prairie fire. Then, an illness called Glanders affected the horses. Sadly, Edward Dawson passed away in Edmonton in 1901.

Even with these early problems, the small townsite kept growing. A place called the Queenstown Hotel was built. Several ranches also started up in the area, helping the community develop.
