History of Quemados
How Quemados Became Part of the United States
Long ago, Puerto Rico was under the control of Spain. After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain and the United States signed a special agreement. This agreement was called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.
Early Population Counts in Quemados
Soon after Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory, the United States Department of War took a count of all the people. This was like a big survey or census. In 1899, they found that 1,255 people lived in the Quemados barrio. This was the first official population count for the area.
