Quercus glaucoides is a type of oak tree. It belongs to the group called "white oaks." You can find this tree only in certain parts of Mexico. These areas include eastern, central, and southern Mexico. Some of the states where it grows are Guanajuato, Guerrero, México State, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacán, Oaxaca, and Puebla.
What is Quercus glaucoides?
This oak tree is mostly a canopy tree. This means it grows tall and forms the top layer of the forest. It is an evergreen tree, so its leaves stay green all year long.
The tree can grow up to 10 meters (about 33 feet) tall. Its trunk can be wider than 40 centimeters (about 16 inches). The leaves are thick and feel like leather. They can be up to 15 centimeters (about 6 inches) long. Each leaf has a few shallow, rounded bumps or lobes along its edges.
Understanding This Oak Tree
Sometimes, people confuse Quercus glaucoides with another oak tree. This other tree is called Lacey oak (Quercus laceyi). Lacey oak grows in northeast Mexico and central Texas. This confusion has made it hard to know the true identity of each tree.
Even though they are somewhat related, these two trees are different.
- Q. glaucoides is found only in Mexico. It is an evergreen tree.
- Q. laceyi grows in both Mexico and Texas. It is a deciduous tree, meaning its leaves fall off in the autumn.
