About the Quileute Reservation
The Quileute people moved to this reservation after signing an agreement called the Quinault Treaty in 1855. This treaty helped define their land.
La Push: The Main Town
The main town on the reservation is La Push, Washington. It's where most of the people live. In the year 2000, about 371 people lived on the reservation. The land area of the reservation is about 4.061 square kilometers (or 1,003.4 acres).
James Island and Land Safety
James Island is an important place for the Quileute people. In 1966, the U.S. government officially gave James Island back to the Quileute. It was discovered that the island was always meant to be part of their reservation.
More recently, the Quileute tribal government has asked the U.S. government for more land. They want to move homes and buildings away from the coastline. This is because of the danger of tsunamis, which are giant ocean waves. Moving homes to higher ground helps keep everyone safe.
How the Quileute Nation is Governed
The Quileute people have their own government. It's called a tribal council. The council members serve for different lengths of time, so they don't all change at once.
Current Tribal Council Members
The people currently on the tribal council are:
- Carol Hatch (who is the chair, or leader)
- Tony Foster (who is the vice-chair)
- DeAnna Hobson (who is the secretary)
- Anna Rose Counsell (who is the treasurer)
These leaders help make decisions for the Quileute community.
