How Quindanning Got Its Name
The town of Quindanning gets its name from a nearby waterhole. This waterhole is called Quindanning Pool. It is located along the Williams River.
The name "Quindanning" comes from an Aboriginal language. It was first written down in 1835. This was when Alfred Hillman discovered the pool.
Early Days of the Town
People started farming in the area in the 1830s. By 1900, the small community had a school and a place for horse races. In 1907, the town area was officially mapped out. It was then recognized as a townsite.
The St. Boniface Church
From 1911 to 1929, a group called the Brotherhood of St. Boniface helped the people of Quindanning. They were based in Williams.
To remember their hard work, the Anglican church in Quindanning was named after their patron saint. It was officially opened in 1956. The church was built using stones. These stones were brought from local farms by members of the church. Building the church cost about 4,600 pounds at that time.
The Quindanning Hotel
The Quindanning Hotel started as a building made of mud bricks. It first got a special license to serve travelers in 1900. The building was greatly updated in 1921.
From 1925 to the late 1950s, the hotel became a famous "inland resort." It was a popular place for people to visit. In the 1930s, the hotel offered many fun activities. These included a 9-hole golf course, horse riding, and game hunting. Guests could also go swimming at Quindanning Pool.
What's in Quindanning Today?
Over the years, Quindanning has had different businesses. It once had a general store, a post office, a hairdresser, and a cafe.
Today, the town has a hotel, a church, and a community hall. It also still has its racecourse. The racecourse is used once a year for the Quindanning Picnic Race Day. This exciting event happens every Easter Saturday.
