Washington Redskins (2015–2019)
A New Position
After not being selected in the 2015 NFL draft, Dunbar signed with the Washington Redskins. He joined the team as a wide receiver, but during training camp, the coaches noticed his skill at blocking players on special teams. Because the team needed help in their defense, they decided to switch his position to cornerback. A cornerback's job is to cover the other team's wide receivers and try to stop them from catching the ball.
He was first placed on the team's practice squad, a group of players who practice with the team but don't play in games. Soon after, he was moved to the active roster.
Making an Impact
Dunbar made his professional debut on October 4, 2015. During his first season, he got his first career interception when he caught a pass thrown by New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning. He started two games and finished his rookie year with 13 tackles and five pass deflections (when a defender knocks the ball away before a receiver can catch it).
In the 2016 season, Dunbar continued to be a key player. In a game against the Giants, he intercepted another pass from Eli Manning. He also showed his versatility by catching a 31-yard pass on a fake punt play. Later that season, he recorded his first career quarterback sack against Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers.
Becoming a Starter
By 2017, Dunbar had become an important part of the Redskins' defense. He played in 15 games and started four of them, recording 35 tackles.
In 2018, the Redskins showed their confidence in him by signing him to a three-year, $10.5 million contract. He became a starting cornerback for the team. That season, he intercepted two passes and had a career-high nine pass deflections before a leg injury ended his season early.

His best season was in 2019. He started 11 games and led the team with a career-high four interceptions. One of his interceptions came against his former college quarterback, Jeff Driskel, and helped the Redskins win the game.
Seattle Seahawks (2020)
In March 2020, Dunbar was traded to the Seattle Seahawks. In a game against the New England Patriots, he intercepted a pass from quarterback Cam Newton. His season was cut short by a knee injury that required surgery.
Final Seasons
In 2021, Dunbar spent brief periods with the Detroit Lions, Arizona Cardinals, and Green Bay Packers, mostly on their practice squads. He did not play in any regular season games for these teams.
Family
Dunbar's cousin is Denzel Perryman, who is also an NFL player. Dunbar has a daughter named Denim, who was born in 2016.
