The Quintuple Alliance was an agreement between five major European countries. It started in 1818 at a meeting called the Congress of Aix-la-Chapelle. At this meeting, France joined an existing group called the Quadruple Alliance.
The original Quadruple Alliance was formed in 1815 by Austria, Prussia, the Russian Empire, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. These countries had worked together to bring peace to Europe after a long period of wars. This peace plan was set up at the Congress of Vienna in 1815.

How the Alliance Worked
After France joined, the five countries of the Quintuple Alliance met several times. These meetings were important for discussing how to keep peace and order in Europe. They also talked about how to deal with new problems that came up.
Important Meetings
The Alliance held three main meetings after the Congress of Aix-la-Chapelle:
- In 1820, they met at the Congress of Troppau in a city now called Opava.
- In 1821, they gathered at the Congress of Laibach, which is now Ljubljana.
- Their last meeting was in 1822 at the Congress of Verona.
Actions of the Alliance
The Alliance members often worked together to solve problems. For example, they allowed Austria to send its army into Italy in 1821. This was to help put down rebellions there. In 1823, they also supported France in sending troops into Spain. This action, known as the French intervention in Spain, was also to help the king of Spain deal with political unrest.
The United Kingdom, however, often chose not to get involved in these actions. They preferred to stay out of the internal affairs of other countries.
The End of the Alliance
The Quintuple Alliance slowly came to an end after 1825. This happened after Emperor Alexander I of Russia passed away. The Alliance was closely linked to another agreement called the Holy Alliance. This Holy Alliance was made up of Austria, Prussia, and Russia.
Even after the Quintuple Alliance officially ended, the major powers of Europe still worked together. For example, France, Britain, and Russia later joined forces to help in the Battle of Navarino. This showed that these powerful countries still had an influence on European events.
