History of Río Blanco
How Río Blanco Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a territory belonging to the U.S. but not fully part of it, like a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census in Puerto Rico. A census is like a big count of all the people living in an area. The census found that the Río Blanco area was divided into two parts:
- Río Blanco Abajo barrio had 976 people.
- Río Blanco Arriba barrio had 959 people.
