History of Río Cañas
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
The history of Río Cañas is connected to the history of Puerto Rico. After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a U.S. state.
Early Population Count
In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count of people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They wanted to know how many people lived in different areas.
The census found that Río Cañas, along with two nearby barrios called Casey Arriba and Ovejas, had a combined population of 1,257 people.
Population Changes Over Time
The number of people living in Río Cañas has changed over the years. Governments often take a census every ten years to keep track of population changes. This helps them plan for schools, roads, and other important services.
