The Río Negro is a river in Chaco Province, Argentina. Its name means "black river" in Spanish. This river flows through the Chaco National Park and moves towards the southeast. Near its end, it passes by cities like Puerto Tirol, Resistencia, and Barranqueras. Finally, it joins the Barranqueras River, which is an arm of the big Paraná River.

How the River Has Changed

Over many years, the Río Negro has often changed its path across the flat lands. This has created many interesting features like wetlands (swampy areas), curvy river sections called meanders, and small lakes known as lagoons.

There are three main reasons why the river's path has changed:

  • It often experiences dry periods, or droughts.
  • Dirt and sand build up in the riverbed.
  • People have sometimes changed the river's path on purpose.

Sadly, some parts of the river are currently affected by pollution. This pollution mostly comes from factories that treat leather.

Historical Importance

The Río Negro is very important to the history of Resistencia, which is the capital city of Chaco Province. Many of the first people who came to live in Chaco arrived in the city by traveling up this river in boats.

Every year on February 2, a special event called the Festival of the Canoes and Boats is celebrated. This festival remembers the day the very first steamboat arrived. It brought pioneers from Friuli (a region in Italy) to the province, marking a big moment in the area's history.
