Radymno is a town in south-eastern Poland. In 2009, it had about 5,543 people living there. Since 1999, Radymno has been part of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship. Before that, from 1975 to 1998, it was in the Przemyśl Voivodeship.

History of Radymno

Radymno, náměstí, památník
A monument celebrating 1000 years since Poland became Christian.

People first lived in the area where Radymno is today a very long time ago. In 1958, archaeologists found signs of a settlement from the 2nd century.

In the early Middle Ages, this area was part of Poland. But in 981, it was taken over by Kievan Rus'. Poland then captured and lost the area two more times. In the mid-1200s, it came under the control of the Mongols. Later, in the mid-1300s, Polish King Casimir III the Great finally took control.

In 1366, a nobleman named Bernard of Szynwałd got permission to start a new settlement. In 1384, Radymno was given to the Bishops of Przemyśl. Then, in 1431, King Władysław II Jagiełło officially made it a town.

Because Radymno was located by the San River and on a busy trade route, it became an important place for trading and markets. However, the town was attacked and robbed many times. For example, by Wallachians in 1488 and by Crimean Tatars in 1502 and 1624. It also suffered from big fires in 1603, 1638, and 1647.

To protect itself, Radymno built defenses in 1625. But it was still captured by the Swedes in 1656 and by Transylvanians in 1657. These wars left Radymno in ruins. It took many years for the town to recover from all the damage. In 1683, the army of Hetman Stanisław Jan Jabłonowski camped near Radymno. They were on their way to Vienna for a famous battle.

In the late 1700s, before Poland was divided by other countries, Radymno had about 1,200 people. It had 154 houses, three churches, a hospital, and a school. There were also two brick factories and a home for the Bishops of Przemyśl.

Around the mid-1700s, Radymno had 860 Roman Catholics, 196 Greek Catholics, and 26 Jewish people. In 1772, Radymno became part of the Habsburg monarchy (Austria). It was part of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. Radymno stayed under Austrian rule until November 1918. That's when Poland became an independent country again.

In 1860, Radymno got a train connection to Przemyśl. The Austrian government thought about building a fortress here. But they decided to build the Przemyśl Fortress instead. From 1857 to 1867, Radymno was the main town of a county. In the late 1800s, about 2,700 people lived in the town.

On May 24, 1915, a battle happened in Radymno during World War I. The Russian 8th Army fought against the German-Austrian 8th Army. The town was almost completely destroyed in this battle.

During the time of the Second Polish Republic, Radymno was part of the Lwów Voivodeship. It had about 2,500 people, including both Polish and Jewish residents.

Radymno During World War II

On September 10, 1939, during the Invasion of Poland, German forces crossed the San River near Radymno. This invasion marked the start of World War II. Radymno came under German occupation. Special German groups entered the town and committed terrible acts against the people. Many Polish military officers from the area were among those killed in the Katyn massacre in 1940. This sad event was carried out by the Russians.

During the war, some groups in the area sadly killed 59 Polish people. This included 29 people killed in the village of Michałówka. Before World War II, there were about 1,200 Jewish people in Radymno. Only a few survived the war. Many Jewish residents faced terrible times, and some were killed by the Nazis in September 1939. The story of the Jewish people of Radymno is told in a book called "The Power of Survival."

The Red Army took Radymno on July 26, 1944, after strong fighting with German tanks. After the war, Radymno was returned to Poland.
