Rafael Gasset Chinchilla was born in Madrid, Spain, on November 23, 1866. His father was Eduardo Gasset y Artime, and his mother was Rafaela Chinchilla y Díaz.

Rafael followed in his father's footsteps. His father had started a newspaper called El Imparcial in 1884. After his father passed away, Rafael became the director of this newspaper.

Starting in Politics

Rafael Gasset began his journey in politics as an independent. This means he didn't belong to a specific political party at first. In the 1891 elections, he won a seat. He became a representative for the Santiago de Cuba district.

Rafael Gasset's Time as a Minister

Rafael Gasset held several important roles in the Spanish government. He was known for his focus on improving Spain's agriculture and public works.

Minister of Agriculture

Gasset served as the Minister of Agriculture, Industry, Commerce, and Public Works twice. His first time was from April 8 to October 23, 1900. His second time was from July 20 to December 15, 1903. He was actually the very first Minister of Agriculture in Spain's history.

He worked to bring together important political figures like Francisco Silvela and General Camilo García de Polavieja in 1898. From 1899, Gasset supported the ideas of Joaquín Costa. Costa wanted to improve farming by building more irrigation systems. Gasset tried to put these ideas into action.

Focus on Public Works

In 1903, during his second term, Gasset pushed for a plan to build more water systems and local roads. However, his ideas were not fully put into practice. This was because the prime minister changed at the end of 1903.

In 1905, he joined the Liberal Party. Soon after, on December 1, 1905, he became the Minister of Public Works. He served under the government led by Segismundo Moret.

Later Life and Legacy

Rafael Gasset Chinchilla passed away on April 11, 1927. He was buried in Galapagar, a town in Spain. His second wife, Rita Díez de Ulzurrun, is also buried there.

A bridge in Burgos, Spain, was named Puente Gasset (Gasset Bridge) in his honor. It was built in 1926 but was later taken down in 2010. In Ciudad Real, Spain, there is also a park named Gasset Park [es]. This park was built in 1915 and is still a tribute to him.
