Understanding the Local Climate

Rancho Calaveras has a climate that is common in the Sierra Nevada foothills. It's called a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. This type of climate has two main seasons.

Winters are cool and wet. Days are mild, but nights can get chilly. There is a good amount of rain during these months. Summers are hot and dry. Days are very hot, but nights are cooler. There is very little rain in the summer.

Because of the mountains nearby, Rancho Calaveras gets more rain than areas further west. This is due to something called the orographic effect. It means that as air rises over mountains, it cools and drops its moisture as rain.
