Randy Jackson's Early Life
Randy Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana. His parents were Joseph Jackson and Katherine Jackson. People sometimes called him "Little Randy." He is the ninth child in the Jackson family and the youngest brother. When the Jackson 5 band first started in 1965, Randy was only three years old. Because of his young age, he was not an original member of the group.
Randy Jackson's Music Career
Joining The Jacksons
Randy first performed live with his brothers in 1971. This was at a Christmas show for blind children. He went on every Jackson 5 tour starting in 1972. During these tours, he often played the congas and other instruments.
Randy officially joined the family band in 1975. This happened when the group left Motown Records for CBS Records. His older brother Jermaine chose to stay with Motown. So, Randy took his place in the band. The Jackson 5 then changed their name to the Jacksons. This was because Motown owned the name "Jackson 5."
When he was 16, Randy helped write "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" with Michael. This song became the Jacksons' most successful single with Epic Records.
In March 1980, Randy was involved in an accident in Hollywood, California. He was injured but recovered well. In June 1980, he appeared on the cover of Jet magazine. The headline shared the good news: "Randy Jackson Walks Again: Talks About His Future."
Randy is a talented musician. He plays many instruments, including congas, percussion, keyboards, piano, bass, and guitar. He sang and played on the Jacksons' songs. He also worked with Michael on his album Off the Wall. Randy joined the Jacksons on their Destiny World Tour (1979-1980), the Triumph Tour (1981), and the Victory Tour (1984).
After the Victory Tour, Randy worked with Lionel Richie. He helped with Richie's album Dancing on the Ceiling in 1985. Randy also joined his brothers Jackie, Tito, Marlon, and his sister La Toya to sing in "We Are the World." This famous song was led by his brother Michael, Lionel Richie, Quincy Jones, and Harry Belafonte.
In 1997, the Jackson 5 were honored in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. However, only the five original members were included. Randy was not part of this induction.
Randy was part of the Jacksons' reunion in 2001 at Madison Square Garden. He also sang backing vocals with Jackie, Tito, Marlon, and Jermaine for Michael's song "This Is It."
After The Jacksons Band
After recording the album 2300 Jackson Street, the group decided to work on their own projects in 1990. Randy then started his own band called Randy & the Gypsys. They released one album before the group stopped performing together. In the same year, he helped start a company called Total Multimedia Inc. This company worked on new ways to store music and information. On June 28, 1998, Randy started his own record label, Modern Records.
Working with Rhythm Nation Records
Today, Randy is a partner with his sister, Janet Jackson. They work together at her independent record label, Rhythm Nation Records. In August 2018, Randy and Janet announced a partnership. Rhythm Nation Records teamed up with Cinq Music, another music company. On August 17, 2018, Janet Jackson's song "Made for Now" was released. Randy helped write this song.
