Joining The Jacksons
Randy first performed live with his brothers in 1971. This was at a special Christmas show for children who were blind. He went on every Jackson 5 tour starting in 1972. During these tours, he mainly played the congas and other instruments.
Randy officially joined the family band in 1975. This happened when the band left Motown Records to join CBS Records. His older brother Jermaine decided to stay with Motown. So, Randy took his place in the group. The Jackson 5 officially changed their name to the Jacksons. This change happened when they signed with Epic Records. Motown Records owned the name "Jackson 5."
When he was 16, Randy helped write a very successful song for the Jacksons. It was called "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)." He wrote it with his brother Michael.
In March 1980, Randy was in a car accident in Hollywood, California. He was seriously hurt. In June 1980, he appeared on the cover of Jet magazine. The headline said, "Randy Jackson Walks Again: Talks About His Future."
Randy can play many instruments. These include congas, percussion, keyboards, piano, bass, and guitar. He sang and played on the Jacksons' songs. He also worked with Michael on his album Off the Wall. Randy was part of several Jacksons' tours. These included the Destiny World Tour (1979-1980) and the Triumph Tour in 1981. He also joined the Victory Tour in 1984.
After the Victory Tour, Randy worked with Lionel Richie. This was for Richie's album Dancing on the Ceiling in 1985. Randy also joined his brothers Jackie, Tito, Marlon, and his sister La Toya. They were part of USA For Africa. They sang in the song "We Are The World." This song was led by Randy's brother Michael, Lionel Richie, Quincy Jones, and Harry Belafonte.
Randy was not included when the Jackson 5 were honored in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Only the five original members of the band were inducted.
He was part of the Jacksons' reunion in 2001. This event took place at Madison Square Garden. However, he was not an official cast member in their 2009 reality TV show. The show was called The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty. He did sing backing vocals with Jackie, Tito, Marlon, and Jermaine. This was for Michael's song "This Is It."
After The Jacksons Band
After recording the album 2300 Jackson Street, the group stopped working together in 1990. Each member then focused on their own projects. After this, Randy started his own band called Randy & the Gypsys. This group released only one album before they broke up. In the same year, he helped start a company called Total Multimedia Inc. He worked with Philip Taylor Kramer, a former bass player from the band Iron Butterfly. Their goal was to create new ways to make data smaller for CD-ROMs. On June 28, 1998, Randy opened his own record label, Modern Records.
Working with Janet Jackson
Randy is currently a partner with his sister, Janet Jackson. They work together at her independent record label, Rhythm Nation Records. On August 16, 2018, Randy and Janet announced a partnership.
